On their first cross country social justice tour in 2003, Etgar wasn't supposed to be in Dallas
for Shabbat but a sick bus driver caused a delay. The group looked on line, found us and spent their first Shabbat
on the road with Beth El Binah quite by accident.
Now, Etgar executive director Billy Planer schedules the trip so that they are with us for their first Shabbat.
From just a dozen people surprising us one Friday night, Etgar night has become one of our favorite annual events.
We start with a potluck dinner for 50, follow that with a short service and then have a discussion -- about the
congregation, about their visits earlier in the day with a Catholic anti-abortion group and to the Sixth Floor
Museum and their discussions with the conspiracy theorists in Dealey Plaza. Then we prepare them for their anti-same-sex
marriage visit later that week with Focus on the Family.
For the 2010 visit, David Taffet led the service. Etgar36 teens lit the candles, sang the prayer over the wine
and challah and did a great job of leading us in various versions of the prayers so that we were loud, out of key
and completely joyous, just like we usually are.
And while there was plenty of food left over, all of Mark Shekter's rugalach disappeared. |
